            Be a Model

  •
    • Students need to hear and see what fluent reading sounds like and see people they respect reading. Show the children in your life how enjoyable it can be to read!

            Read with Your Child

  •
    • Students need assisted, guided oral reading practice with a parent or older sibling. Students love to read with you…let them!

            Practice, practice, practice

  •
    • There is no such thing as to much practice when it comes to reading! Spend time as a family, each reading something they enjoy personally. Make it a shared time together. Don’t let your student just read what is assigned and only when it is assigned…turn off the TV and pick up a book.

            Word Study

  •
    • Students need to build their sight word knowledge in order to recognize words quickly. Flashcards, word lists, and word bingo are great ways to build this skill. Make it a game and children will find it more enjoyable. Use travel time in the car to find sight words on signs…use TV commercials to pick out words they know…remind your student that words are truly all around them!
